GRAD INFORMATION!

Plans for the grade 8 graduation are underway!

Here are some of the confirmed details!


CEREMONY:
DATE: Tuesday June 27
TIME: Grad ceremony 5:30-6:30    Grad reception at the school 6:30-7:00

Cake and drinks will be provided at the reception.

GUESTS:
There is no limit to bringing guests to grad as we presume with only 12 grads we won't fill up the gym.
But I am cautioning students to really just bring those closest to them


HELPERS
Our MC's for the evening are Grade 7 students Myla and Hailey and they are already practicing their script. We also have grade 7 students helping with handing out pamphlets and managing the tech.  Baily, another Grade 7 student, has graciously devoted her time to create an awesome looking program pamphlet.


THEME
The students voted on the theme for grad and it is Hollywood at Night! The grad art team is starting now to create the artwork for this event. They are very dedicated and organized and it's going to look fantastic! 

VALEDICTORIANS
Valedictorians have been determined by voting and there was a tie so there are 3: congratulations Kendra, Cy, and Ellie! They have started speech writing. 

MEDIA
The Baby photos slide show is getting underway. Students, bring in your baby and toddler photo ASAP!

AFTER THE CEREMONY
Any after ceremony events (after 7pm) are to be determined by parents/students and are organized and supervised by the parents involved.

It is up to the parents coordinating these events to provide the necessary information to the invitees. (such as contact details, etc)

I will gladly help pass out any information or invites but, unlike in years past,  I am not involved in any after event planning for events past 7pm.  This is per SCDSB regulations. So any questions about those events will have to go to whoever is planning those events.

As regards any after events, parents will be responsible for picking up/dropping off their children to any after event. (In other words, no school bus provided as in years past).

GRAD SET UP AND PRACTICE**June 22 as long as baseball tournament raindate isn't needed. If June 22 turns out to be baseball, we will hold practice on Monday June 26
On Thursday June 22 starting at the middle block we will be setting up for grad and doing a dress rehearsal. All graduates are asked to attend as this is our ONLY dress rehearsal. Participation is mandatory. If you have a special pair of shoes you would like to 'wear in' you are more than welcome to bring them to this practice!

ARRIVAL FOR GRAD: Tuesday JUNE 27

Graduates are asked to arrive by 5:15 at the latest and to meet in Mrs. Cumming's room. We enter in a processional after all guests are seated in the gym.

So there will be more information forthcoming about those events once the students/parents nail down the specific details!

From what I'm hearing, two boys are interested in creating after events. The will be making invitations to hand out to all the grade 8's, hopefully soon. These invites should have all the details. 

I will help pass out the invites but am not involved in any after event planning so any further questions will have to go to whoever is planning those events (and hopefully most questions will be answered on the invitation, once you receive them).

ART GALLERY AND SLAM POETRY CAFE BACK ON FOR ORIGINAL DATE!

Mrs. Czarnota and I have managed to reschedule our art gallery and slam poetry cafe for Weds April 26th!

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

This WEDNESDAY APRIL 26th at 12:30 the grade ⅞ class here at Shanty Bay will be hosting a SLAM POETRY CAFE and ART GALLERY!

Students will be presenting their slam poems during the cafe! Afterwards, there will be time to tour our art gallery showcasing the art research projects!. Students researched an artist of their choice, detailed a short biography, wrote an essay analysis on a piece of their artwork, and then created an artwork of their own in that artist’s style!

The event starts at 12:30 in the tech room downstairs! Please sign in at the office!

We have started Slam Poetry with Mrs. Czarnota!

On April 26, we will have a public exhibition with an ART GALLERY and A SLAM POETRY CAFE.

During this event, open to parents and the community, we will showcase our ART research/creations (see Art Research page for more details) AND our Slam Poetry performances.

ART, COMMUNITY WALKS, DREAM VACATION...

First of all, students have now selected an artist to research for our upcoming art gallery exhibition April 26. (see page on Art Research Task for more details)

Second of all, students are well on their way to completing their Dream Vacations! Presentations are set! (see page above to learn all about this Financial Literacy/Oral Language/Media project)

Lastly, we went on our first community walk of the spring! We will continue to take these walks to a) be together as a class community, b) enjoy nature/exercise (great for health/stress reduction!) and c) apply our artistic eye to our personal experiences!

On our first trek, students were asked, in pairs, to decide on an image/photo that best represented the walk to them. Then they uploaded them to our instagram account (see sidebar to link to our class instagram)

DREAM VACATION MEDIA PRESENTATION!

This is one of my favourite projects in intermediate! Students love researching, planning, budgeting, and dreaming about their favourite get-away!

TASK: You have been given an imaginary $7500 to spend on a dream vacation. You are to create a media/oral presentation about your travel plans and costs.

ECO SPARK GUEST SPEAKER!

As part of being involved in the Outdoor Ed pilot project at SCDSB, I met Eco Sparkl

Today they came into my class to present information on local and use and, specifically, on the environmental impact of quarries/pits.

We are preparing letters for Mr. Hall, Councillor at Oro Medonte Township, with questions and ideas we have now that we have learned about quarries.

Change Agent Exhibtion!

Many thanks to the parents and guests who came out for today's Change Agent exhibition!

And of course many thanks to the students who took action on an issue and shares those actions with their classmates and the community today!

CHANGE AGENT EXHIBITION!

Next Monday March 6 is our Change Agent Exhibition!

Students, this is the interview sheet you will be using at the exhibition!

An email has gone out or will go out to all parents about this exhibition! We are also inviting the guests we have had in our classroom over the duration of this project!

Hello,

On March 6, in the middle block (12:00-12:45 approximately), we will be holding our Change Agent exhibition. This is an opportunity for students to share what they have done with each other and with the community at large.

You are welcome to attend this event!

The class will be divided in half, with one half 'presenting' and the other half interviewing/viewing. Each 'presenter' will have a booth, with a laptop, and will be able to show their accomplishments.

The Change Agent project started in September of this school year and lasted until March. Students were given this challenge: to choose an issue that they cared about and then take action on that issue.

This project was based in part on the UN Global Goals.

This project is similar in spirit to Genius Hour or Passion Projects, which other schools have implemented. This is the first time we have done this in our class.

We have had numerous guest speakers in our class in regards to this project:

• Denise Cole and Glenn Stephenson from the SCDSB Equity and Inclusion Resource Team
• Sandra Willems, Shanty Bay PS parent & a local graphic designer
• Grade 8 Orillia artist/student, Ani, her mom and photographer Jeff Buchanon
• Phil Hall, local Oro Medonte Councillor
• Margaret Prophet from the Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition

After March Break we will be seeking feedback from students, parents and the community as to their thoughts on the project and ways to improve it (a survey link will be on the class blog!).

Thank you to the Alzheimer's Society!

Yesterday we had guest speakers in our class.

These guest speakers were arranged by a grade 8 student, Nick. His Change Agent project is on the Alzheimer's Society.

For his community action, he asked a guest speaker to come in.

This was a really great presentation! Thank you so much for educating us on the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and on the importance of kindness, empathy and patience!

STEAM: Cardboard Armor

On Friday of last week, we did our latest biweekly STEAM challenge.

This one involved cardboard and make-do, which are little blue screws that screw into cardboard.

The challenge was to create a helmet and chest plate first. Then you could extend the design to include arms, legs, and decorative elements.

All of this took place within about three periods. Then we went on a tour of the school to show off our creations.

STEAM emphasizes design planning: brainstorming, creating, revising, solving problems, taking initiative, building confidence in one's ideas, trial and error, collaborating, using materials and time wisely, and so on. Many of these skills are transferable across the curriculum.

Here are some picture of our creations.

GUEST SPEAKER: Phil Hall Oro Medonte Councillor

Yesterday, local Councillor for Ward 3, Phil Hall, came to speak to our class.

He spoke about the different levels of government, and how he came to be Councillor and what it means to be a Councillor. He discussed some of the current issues facing Oro Medonte right now.

Students got the chance to tell Mr. Hall about the places they love in Oro-Medonte and Shanty Bay, places like the Church Woods, the Dock at line 2, the beach at Line 9, and so on.

Students also presented some of their concerns, such as how cold it is at the arena, how some roads need to be fixed, and the problem with the dumping at  line 1.

I think it was AWESOME for students to meet their local representative and see how the decison making process works in a democratic system.

Also, we talked about what it means to be a citizen in a democracy, how you have the right to be informed,, to contact your local Councillor (or MP or MPP) with concerns.

In the context of our Change Agent project, we learned how it is possible to take action at a local level.

I think it was an informative day for everyone! Thank you, Mr. Hall, for visiting!
