END OF SUMMER MEDIA CREATION COUNTDOWN! Here's #4!

As in my previous post, I'm making little media pieces to celebrate the end of summer/start of school.

For this one I decided to use the iMovie trailer templates! I took a few pics and vids around the school, and used them in this exciting video! The trailer template provides the pacing and the music.

I then uploaded it to our class youtube page. HERE IT IS!

END OF SUMMER MEDIA CREATION COUNTDOWN! Here's #5!

Leading up to the first day of school...I thought I'd do a little media driven, start-of-school-end-of-summer themed 5 DAY COUNT DOWN!

I created this gif at gifcreator.me in about five minutes using a camera, a marker and white board. Just to show media creation and narratives can be as simple or as complex as you like!

APPS FOR SCHOOL

I highly encourage the use of tech devices and incorporate them regularly into my program.

If you are bringing your own device to school, these are some apps you will find helpful:

Blogger
Google Docs
Instagram (for access to our class account)

WELCOME! September 2016

Hello!

"ONLY CONNECT"... These two simple words (the epigraph to E.M. Foresters 1910 novel "Howard's End") have stuck with me since I was an undergrad at University studying English in the 1990's.

They sum up the essence of literacy &, I believe, the purpose of school.

We are communicators. We read, we write, we solve, we learn, we share through a wide variety of mediums.

The technology age has only enhanced this aspect of our human nature. We tweet. We blog. We Facebook.

We continue to read, write, learn and share in new ways and as such are becoming digital citizens.

This class blog will grow as this class grows through the year.

Please explore the site & let me know if you've any questions, concerns or comments! I always welcome feedback. My email is jujohnson@scdsb.on.ca.

MEDIA ANALYSIS: Music Videos and Commercials

We are bombarded regularly with various images in media. Consider music videos and commercials. Have you ever stopped to consider what those images are saying? What are those symbols, 'visual metaphors'? On a gut level we usually 'know' but can we communicate our understanding of what we 'know'?

In this last media unit of the year, we will be looking at music videos and commercials to analyze the images used. We will 'interpret their meaning' and in the process look at audience and point of view.

Here's an example.

STRESSED OUT by 21 Pilots

First, we looked at the lyrics. What is this song/poem saying? What is the 'main idea'?

Next, we examine the music video. What are the images used? How do they relate to the main idea of the song/poem (if at all)? What is their meaning?

Who is this song/poem/video for?

Another example:

ROYALS by Lorde

Again, look at the lyrics. What is it saying? What is the main idea?

Next, look at the music video. What are the images used? How do they relate to the main idea? Who is this song for?

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE UNITS!

I actually once created a whole website devoted to this exploration.

HEALTH UNIT: Gender

This task is based on a workshop I attended at the SCDSB Equity Conference this past May.

1. On your Gender-bread Girl/Boy list all the gender stereotypes.

2. Answer these q's in your group.

3. Facts about SCDSB
